1⁄2 c. butter, softened 1-1⁄2 c. brown sugar, packed and divided 1 c. plus 2 T. all-purpose flour, divided 2 eggs, beaten 1 t. baking powder 1 t. vanilla extract 1⁄2 t. salt 1-1⁄2 c. chopped dates or raisins 1 c. chopped walnuts or pecans
Mix together butter, 1⁄2 cup brown sugar and one cup flour in a medium bowl until the consistency of fine crumbs. Press butter mixture into the bottom of a greased 13"x9" baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes; remove from oven. Mix remaining brown sugar and flour, eggs, baking powder, vanilla and salt; blend well. Stir in dates or raisins and nuts; pour mixture over baked crust. Return to oven; bake 15 to 20 more minutes. Cool completely and cut into squares. Makes 2 dozen.
