Gram's Blackberry Jam Cake

Enjoy this recipe from Christmas at Grandma's.

1 t. baking soda
3 T. buttermilk
3/4 c. butter, softened
3 eggs, beaten
1 c. sugar
1 c. seedless blackberry jam
2 c. all-purpose flour, divided
1 t. cinnamon
1/2 t. nutmeg
1/2 t. ground cloves
Garnish: caramel or fluffy white frosting


In a cup, dissolve baking soda in buttermilk; set aside. In a large bowl, stir together butter and sugar. Add eggs, jam and one cup flour; mix well. Add soda mixture, spices and remaining flour; beat well. Spread batter in a greased and floured 13" x 9" baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 to 40 minutes, until a toothpick test clean. Cool, spread with frosting. Serves 10 to 12.
