2 c. all-purpose flour
1/4 c. sugar
3/4 t. baking soda
1/2 t. salt
1/3 c. shortening
1/2 c. milk
3 T. lemon juice
Sift together flour, sugar, baking soda and salt in a large bowl. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Combine milk and lemon juice; quickly stir into flour mixture to form a soft dough. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface; knead slightly. Form into small marble-size balls. Place 3 balls into each greased muffin cup; bake at 450 degrees for 15 minutes, or until golden. Makes one dozen.
